The Petrov Affair plot

In April 1954, Vladimir Petrov, the head of the Soviet Union's espionage service in Australia, approached ASIO, the Australian secret service. He requested asylum and was granted it. His defection caused the biggest espionage scandal in Australian history. Petrov and his wife moved to a suburb of Melbourne under a false name, and diplomatic ties between Australia and the Soviet Union were severed.
