The Ipcress File plot

It is 1963. The Cold War is raging between the west and the east. Nuclear bombers are permanently in the air. In this highly charged atmosphere, Harry Palmer, a British army sergeant, is on the run in Berlin. The smart young man with refined taste can earn a lot of money in the divided city. His interests bring Harry into contact with all kinds of people, until the law catches up with him and everything comes to a halt. Major Dalby, the leader of a security unit, gives Harry a way out by offering him a job as an intelligence officer. His first mission: to investigate the unit of a missing British nuclear scientist.

The Ipcress File is based on the 1965 film of the same name starring Michael Caine. In the 6-part series, the role of Harry Palmer is excellently played by Joe Cole (Gangs of London, Pure, Peaky Blinders). The Ipcress File is an atmospheric conspiracy and espionage drama, set during the Cold War in the 1960s.

The executive producers are Hillary and Steven Saltzman, daughter and son of James Bond producer Harry Saltzman (from Russia With Love, among others). Perhaps that is why it is not so surprising that there are similarities. The Ipcress File is not only attractive, but also beautifully designed. A touch of romance, a pinch of humor and some mild tension; I was reminded a bit of The Avengers. Maybe sometimes just too smooth to really make an impression, but it is certainly entertaining.
