Spijkerhoek was one of those series my sisters watched. When I was in the Netherlands I would watch because there was only 1 TV at mother's house. I thought it was a Dutch series that approached the American level of TV drama quite well in terms of storylines, plot development and tension. The acting was of a decent level, especially Hidde Maas plays very well. The man also has a genuine gangster head. But younger actors and actresses such as Victor Reinier, Joep Sertons, Manouk van der Meulen and Mary-Lou van Steenis were certainly not bad either. The latter also scored a top 40 hit through this series because her character Patty Starrenburg, an up and coming singer. After the third season, almost all remaining characters from the first hour disappeared. They were replaced by new characters. Only Mario de Pizzabakker (Michiel Kerbosch) and Gerard Verlinde (Hidde Maas) remained as faces of the first hour. Because of that mass exodus, the series lost its identity and also the connection with the loyal viewer. Although a fifth followed after the disappointing fourth season, the cake was actually already finished.
