Korea, the 18th century. Yi San is an aloof and perfectionist young crown prince. After the murder of his father and the death of his grandfather, he becomes king. At court he meets a young woman named Sung Deok-im. Yi San falls in love with her and tries to persuade her to become his official concubine. But Deok-im is strong-willed, free-spirited, and intelligent enough to understand that being a concubine will limit her freedom and likely bring her little joy. However, his love for her is genuine and Deok-im begins to understand that an alliance with him could ultimately be good for the troubled empire.
