Excellent HBO thriller drama, with good cast led by superior Kate Winslet. In Easttown (a suburb of Philadelphia) the crisis has hit hard; with alcohol and apparently strong family ties -everyone is uncle, brother, aunt, cousin or niece - the community struggles for a better future. Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) is a local police detective confronted with a missing persons case that seems to have parallels to a previous case. Mare is the anti-hero type, or hero against will and thanks, and has to deal with the necessary traumas herself. And as it should be: Mare's grief has imploded. The arrival of friendly and naive fellow detective Colin Zabel (Evan Peters) seems to put an end to fatalism.
With numerous storylines, the smooth scenario provides a realistic and intense picture of today's America. This tidings of Easttown is shot in depressing, faded colors, making for beautiful photography. This sublime drama is directed by Craig Zobel (directed episodes of Westworld, The Leftovers and American Gods) and gives HBO a great return to form after the disappointing and forced The Undoing.

Mare of Easttown, is set in a desolate us know our little town called 'Easttown'. A city full of gray characters, where everyone carries a dark secret.
I see that there is quite a lot of negativity surrounding The Series in the comment section. It wouldn't be innovative enough, and it would be something we've seen 100x before. I strongly disagree with that. Because with this genre there is no need to reinvent the wheel. In fact, there are quite a few elements in it, which we have not seen so often and which are very well worked out.
In any case, I think the whole dynamic of Mare, with the town, is a very strong element. The fact that almost everyone in this series is a gray character also makes this very strong. There is a lot of tension and a lot of drama. Maybe the murder and kidnapping isn't all that intriguing, but the whole drama surrounding it definitely is! The series also offers excellent acting and Kate Winslet in particular takes this to a higher level. Winslet is a formidable actress anyway, but here she excels again. Cinematography and the music are certainly not bad either. The many plot twists that are in it were also very well developed and you only really realize it all at the end.
