KRANK Berlin plot

Managing a chaotic emergency room in Berlin’s toughest and most overcrowded hospital is no easy task for young Dr. Parker, who’s looking for a fresh start in the big city after her personal life in Munich implodes. As she tries to push through necessary reforms, Parker faces resistance from the hospital’s underpaid, ill-equipped, and chronically fatigued staff who survive only on a vital dose of dark humor. But in the face of an increasingly ruthless healthcare system, the battered team must put aside their differences and work together to save lives.

KRANK Berlin season 1

Hospital series operate according to a tried-and-true concept: drama, medical errors and rescues, a variety of patients, a touch of romance, and a dash of humor. A tried-and-true formula, yet worn out. Like The Pitt, Krank Berlin (Berlin ER) opts for an original approach. In this eight-part German series, there are no slick doctors or attractive medical staff, but rather idiosyncratic, incompetent, imperturbable, flawed, and above all, ruthless ER staff. The patients are often homeless, stateless, addicted, demented, or neglected. So, excited yet?

Krank Berlin initially feels like a hallucinatory fever dream, gloomy, dark, raw, humorless, and depressing. This German answer to—well, what, really—embraces the raw, free spirit of Berlin and explores the vulnerable side of society. It takes some getting used to. Gradually, the series gains in power and is convincing thanks to the excellent performances of, among others, Haley Louise Jones (as Dr. Parker). For the perseverant.
