The heartbreaking true story of Ann Ming, a mother who, with love, courage, and determination, is fighting to change the double jeopardy law. Her daughter, Julie, disappeared in 1990 and her body was found 80 days later. The killer was acquitted twice due to mistrials but later confessed. However, the double jeopardy law prevented a retrial. The tenacious mother is determined to ensure that her daughter's killer can finally be brought to justice.

I Fought the Law season 1

The two-time BAFTA-nominated miniseries I Fought the Law tells the gripping story of Ann Ming (Sheridan Smith), mother of missing daughter Julie. I Fought the Law fits seamlessly into the ranks of series like Toxic Town, The Salisbury Poisonings, and Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office: the ordinary citizen takes on powerful or failing institutions.

Despite the nominations, I Fought the Law is a bit of a letdown. The credibility of the dramatized true story is under considerable pressure in a few places. The script is also quite predictable in the first episodes, causing the momentum to slowly drain from the narrative. The series possesses enough British solidity to avoid falling below the acceptable standard—Sheridan Smith acts brilliantly—but it does not reach the level of Toxic Town.
