Hunters plot

New York City 1977. The Hunters, as they are known, have discovered that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials live among ordinary citizens and seek to create a "Fourth Reich" in the United States. The Hunters team embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their new genocidal plans.

Gister de eerste drie afleveringen gezien. De meeste personages worden als dramatische karikaturen neergezet om te verhullen dat ze slecht slecht uitgediept zijn en Al Pacino loopt daar een beetje als foreigner of reason tussendoor. Het opspoorwerk is op zich wel interessant, maar al die karikaturen er omheen hadden van mij niet gehoeven. Met een zwarte lesbienne die bij de FBI werkt, en de Aziatische 'hunter' probeert deze serie verder nodeloos iets te politiek correct te doen, terwijl ze met onnodig vloeken proberen toch de jeugd aan te spreken. Voor de kijker die vaker series of films heeft gezien die zich in de jaren '70 afspeelt, voelt dit gevloek wat onrealistisch aan.

Watched the first three episodes yesterday. Most of the characters are portrayed as dramatic caricatures to disguise that they are poorly developed and Al Pacino walks in between a bit as foreigner of reason. The tracking work is interesting in itself, but all those caricatures around it were not necessary for me. With a black lesbian who works for the FBI and the Asian 'hunter', this series also tries to unnecessarily be too politically correct, while trying to appeal to the youth with unnecessary swearing. For the viewer who has often seen series or films set in the 1970s, this swearing feels a bit unrealistic.

Onevenwichtige, maffe mengeling van drama, geweld en komedie, best onderhoudend maar nogal dik aangezet. De inventieve casting en de bizarre plotlijnen maken veel goed, maar de personages zijn net iets te cartoonish om geloofwaardig over te komen. De sporadische Auschwitz-flashbacks zijn daarnaast behoorlijk oneerbiedig en smakeloos. Het doet al met al een beetje aan als een kruising van Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds en de eerdere Amazon-serie The Boys, al wordt het niveau van die twee nergens gehaald.

Unbalanced, crazy mix of drama, violence and comedy, quite entertaining but rather thick. The inventive casting and the bizarre plot lines make up for a lot, but the characters are just a bit too cartoonish to be credible. The sporadic Auschwitz flashbacks are also quite irreverent and tasteless. All in all, it feels a bit like a cross between Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and the earlier Amazon series The Boys, although the level of those two is nowhere reached.

Een serie van uitersten: van bloederige scenes tot zeer humoristische en scherpe one-liners. Qua setting heel prettig om naar te kijken; kosten noch moeite gespaard om de jaren '70 uit te beelden. Een verhaal dat in de laatste aflevering (die in feite het meest saai was) van dit eerste seizoen een onverwachte wending krijgt. Het geheel deed me enerzijds denken aan The Man in the High Castle (Serie, 2015 - 2019) en anderzijds aan The Boys from Brazil (Film, 1978). Bij dit soort series vind ik het moeilijk om het over acteerprestaties te hebben alhoewel Olin als de kolonel en Pacino als Offerman voor mij de beste rollen neerzetten. Baker als Simpson viel ook wel op...

A series of extremes: from bloody scenes to very humorous and sharp one-liners. In terms of setting, very pleasant to look at; No effort has been spared to portray the '70s. A story that takes an unexpected turn in the last episode (which was in fact the most boring) of this first season. The whole thing reminded me on the one hand of The Man in the High Castle (Series, 2015 - 2019) and on the other hand of The Boys from Brazil (Film, 1978). With these types of series I find it difficult to talk about acting performances, although Olin as the Colonel and Pacino as Offerman give the best roles for me. Baker as Simpson also stood out...
