Het Jaar van Fortuyn plot

The political establishment is shocked by the stormy rise of the flamboyant newcomer Pim Fortuyn. PvdA party leader Ad Melkert, the main contender in the battle for the Torentje, sees how the political game is changing rapidly under the influence of the idiosyncratic populist Fortuyn. What follows is an election campaign that is unparalleled. The rapidly increasing popularity of Fortuyn forces the establishment to take a strong stand. The resulting dramatic events leave their mark on society and the personal lives of the main characters.

Most of what I wanted to say about the series has already been said. I enjoyed watching it, but that parody style does make me question things at times. Of course I am aware that I am not here watching a documentary and that there is always some fiction involved. I've heard Tom Hanks say that as standard to the 'real' characters he plays, he says: ''I'm going to say things you never said. Go places you never were. Do things you never did''. Logically. At the same time, you naturally hope that people remain as natural as possible.

I also thought it was a shame that well-known names such as Thijs Römer and Frank Lammers had to show up for this. In this role I think Römer is a very awkward choice and Lammers is on TV too much I can hardly take him seriously anymore. Give those kinds of roles to lesser-known actors, I'd say. Still, I was impressed with the cast. I thought Ramsey Nasr was very strong and the same goes for Jeroen Spitzenberger. They're not complete lookalikes, but that's okay. There is only one Ad Melkert and there was only one Pim Fortuyn and the actors seem to have noticed that. In fact, I think that if Spitzenberger had gone even further, it might have turned into a caricature and that is now being prevented.

I did not (consciously) experience Fortuyn's period, but his story is of course one that should not be forgotten. Regardless of your opinion about his vision, the political climate has changed with his arrival and you can see that the issues he put on the map are now an integral part of the political debate. In my opinion, this series could have been a bit longer, but it nevertheless provides a clear summary of his political career.

3.5*

What an excellent Dutch series.

Resulting in a very sad event for the Netherlands. I can still remember the day just like 9-11.

Excellent acting. Even though the characters are not entirely similar, behavior and personality are well acted.

Good to use Mat Hetben as a kind of voice over.

The script is presumably a free interpretation of the events. I find the process fascinating.

It is nicely illustrated that it is not the content that is so important in politics, but rather the charisma and the personal experience of the politicians. We've known that for a long time. Amazingly, political parties keep putting totally acharismatic leaders first.

I thought it was special that the murderer apparently did not act alone.

It is also good that the period after the murder of Fortuyn is also depicted.

“I'm going to be Prime Minister of this country, and if I'm not, then I am.”

The Year of Fortuyn is an excellent Dutch series that offers a good insight into the political chess game of that time. Politics is often too complex for young people, but this series manages to give it a good and interesting twist by adopting a kind of parody style. Politics is more appealing here, for the 'ordinary man' and if I was a social studies teacher, I would know. There was going to be a paper about this.

Personally, I am a fan of political nonsense. This era in the Netherlands in particular has logically left a great impression on me. The portrayal of the constant framing and demonization of Fortuyn is well portrayed and sad to see again. The man was just incredibly charismatic, while the rest of the cabinet only had a-charismatic leaders. Matt Herben's (Fedja) monologues also made it even more enjoyable to watch.

I really liked the acting, by the way. Jeroen Spitzenbergen put Fortuyn down really strong. The accent, exercise, it was all right. Ramsey Nasr, as Ad Melkert, was also impressive. Furthermore, everyone was actually of a very high level.

Definitely a must to check! It can be seen for free on the NPO site.
