Australia I saw once a long time ago as a teenager, but I wasn't impressed then, but I can't remember much of it now either. Given a second chance because of the extended version.
If I compare it to the movie version, this one is much better. The music that is missing in the movie adds much more emotion, the extra added scenes offer more depth to the characters and the editing of the order of different scenes is also better. It is now more seen from Nullah's point of view.
The acting is strong from both Kidman and Jackman and they have good chemistry. I found the change in behavior of Kidman's character a bit too abrupt and not well developed. It goes too fast.
For the rest, you are taken through different moments. So it is not only about the cattle transport, but also the reconstruction of Faraway Downs, the relationship between the characters, the racial discrimination and the Japanese invasion. So it shows multiple sides of how things could be in that time. On the one hand nice, but I would have liked to see much more adventure of the wild life in Australia.
The ending is touching and does something to you. In the film, The Drover doesn't die and it really is a happy ending, but here he does die. It also ends bittersweet. Despite the fact that you hope that they will still have a future together, the ending makes a much bigger impression here. The acting is also very well done, which also scores plus points. That's why I think it's done better here.
