DI Ray plot

Leicester-born Rachita Ray, who works for the Birmingham police force, is promoted to work in a murder investigation. However, she is told that the murder was specifically culture-based, leading her to suspect that she was selected for the investigation because of her ethnicity and not her ability. However, she remains on the case, determined to find the killer. She goes deep into the underworld of organized crime, and she wants to disprove the prejudices of her colleagues.

DI Ray season 1

With the appointment of DI Rachita Ray (Parminder Nagra - ER, Maternal), her new supervisor can put another check mark; someone of color who can quickly help solve a murder case within the south asian community. It is one example of prejudice and everyday racism within the British police, in this case the Culturally Specific Homicide team. Although DI Ray is more (social) drama than detective, the murder case is given space in all four episodes. It's not really exciting. But dramatically, DI Ray is excellent.

That is partly the merit of actress and creator Maya Sondhi and producer Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodyguard). It looks slick. Although some improbability has crept into the screenplay - the fling between Ray and fellow PS Tony Khatri is quite aplomb - it remains lively and full of twists & turns for four episodes. In short: above average and with potential for season 2.
