Fitz: "You're a bit like a doctor, aren't you?"

Beck: "Sorry?"

Fitz: "You tend to bury your mistakes."

I think most people know Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid from Harry Potter, which I only discovered by sheer chance. Other than that, I haven't seen much with him either, but Cracker shouldn't be missed if you like detectives. His character 'Fitz' may not be a detective himself, but he works as a psychologist for the Manchester police and can unleash his cynical super brain on numerous cases, perpetrators and suspects, but in the core (besides a bit soapy, but certainly not gooey, elements) this is 'just' a detective - but an ordinary detective it is not, please. He drinks, smokes and gambles that it is a delight and it seems to me that he eats the same amount, but that is not really shown here. In the course of the series, he also has a crush on a cop.

The series is gritty, gruesome and ruthless, set against an equally drab background of 90s Manchester. There is also a lot of humor in it, but it is mainly in Fitz's lyrics, and they are usually ruthless. Maybe it feels a bit dated here and there and even forced in terms of psychology and also in terms of murder cases, it is occasionally a bit thick, but it just works, even more than 20 years later. Excellent supporting cast all, with 'Panhandle' and DCI Wise being my favourites.

I found the last episode in Hong Kong (s3, a so-called special) a bit less because of some mediocre supporting roles and a somewhat bland soundtrack, although the case itself and how Fitz approached things again was quite interesting. I will not consider Cracker The Movie (2006) here.

A real binge-watch delight, already looking forward to the next tour. Thick 4.5*.

PS: does anyone know more series by the writer Jimmy McGovern and are they that good?
