Thousands of lives cross each other every day at the station. It is the start and end point of large and small journeys. Where people of all ages and nationalities are on the move. Every journey with its own reason, every traveler with its own story. In the new drama series 'Centraal' we follow the story of one of these travelers in every episode: people who see their lives take a surprising turn after a chance meeting.

'Centraal' is niet over de gehele linie even sterk, maar heeft zeker een aantal positieve uitschieters die vertrouwen inboezemen over jonge filmmakers. De openingsfilm 'Wat je vindt mag je houden' heeft de meeste aandacht getrokken als een soort zedenschets tussen een jonge gelovige met een kinderwens (Judith Noyons) en een antireligieuze travestiet (Maarten Heijmans). Een mooi, simpel sfeerportret van een underground dragscene en de toenadering van twee tegenpolen die meer gemeen hebben dan ze denken. 'Afua' vind ik zelf nog wat fijner, omdat het zo'n heerlijk simpel uitgangspunt heeft: een meisje wordt uit de schoolbus gezet als haar moeder een tripje naar de Efteling niet heeft betaald. De minderjarige haakt op het station aan bij een adolescente ijsjesverkoper en wordt meegenomen in het Rotterdamse uitgaansleven. Waar seks, alcohol, drugs en mannen een sluimerende dreiging zijn. 'Teef' heeft een gave synthesizersoundtrack, maar het is eigenlijk de zoveelste Flodder-misère rond mensen in de marge. 'Khata' over jongensprostitutie kwam snoei- en snoeihard binnen, ook omdat de liefdesrelatie tussen een Nederlands-Marokkaanse jongen en een witte architect zó mooi en tegelijkertijd zo wreed is. De meer absurdistische vertellingen als 'Beenlampman' en 'Karman' voelen ietwat als een stijlbreuk met de sociaal-realistische verhalen die de hoofdmoot vormen. Maar ik teken absoluut voor een nieuwe reeks verhalen rond een ander Nederlands station.

'Central' is not equally strong across the board, but it certainly has a number of positive outliers that instill confidence in young filmmakers. The opening film 'You can keep what you think' has attracted most attention as a kind of morality sketch between a young believer with a desire to have children (Judith Noyons) and an anti-religious transvestite (Maarten Heijmans). A beautiful, simple atmospheric portrait of an underground drag scene and the approach of two opposites who have more in common than they think. I like 'Afua' even better, because it has such a wonderfully simple premise: a girl is kicked off the school bus if her mother has not paid for a trip to the Efteling. At the station, the minor hooks up with an adolescent ice cream seller and is taken along in the Rotterdam nightlife. Where sex, alcohol, drugs and men are a dormant threat. 'Bitch' has a cool synthesizer soundtrack, but it's actually just another Flodder misery around people on the margins. 'Khata' about boy prostitution came in hard, also because the love affair between a Dutch-Moroccan boy and a white architect is so beautiful and at the same time so cruel. The more absurdist stories such as 'Beenlampman' and 'Karman' feel somewhat like a break in style with the social-realistic stories that form the main part. But I'm definitely signing up for a new series of stories around another Dutch station.
