Aquarius - Season 1 (2015)

Aquarius plot

Aquarius tells the story of a Los Angeles police officer in the late 1960s investigating a petty criminal and cult leader. He soon finds out that he is more than a simple criminal and cult leader (later it will be revealed that it is Charles Manson). The undercover operation continues and the police officer and his partner find out that Manson has committed several crimes. Ultimately, the investigation leads to the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders.

Ik snap niet dat ze dan Charles Manson gebruiken maar dan van alles veranderen en bij verzinnen... Verzin dan gewoon een personage i.p.v. een echt bestaand iemand. Dat was juist 1 van de redenen dat ik ging kijken, omdat ik dacht dat het over Manson en the Manson family ging. Beetje jammer.

I don't understand why they use Charles Manson but then change everything and come up with something... Then just make up a character instead of a real person. That was exactly one of the reasons I went to watch it, because I thought it was about Manson and the Manson family. A pity.

Ik zie geen reden om de 2 seizoenen van deze serie apart te bespreken want seizoen 1 loopt draadloos over in seizoen 2. In het begin had ik het een beetje moeilijk met de hoofdrolspeler, David Duchovny, omdat zijn kop me constant aan de X-Files (waar ik totaal geen fan van ben) deed denken. Maar eens dat ik gewend was aan zijn rol als flik moet ik zeggen dat hij eigenlijk een sterke acteerprestatie neerzet. Eigenlijk gaat het hoofdverhaal over "The Manson Family" en de opbouw van hun sekte met als climax de gruwelijke moordpartij. Er spelen zich nog veel boeiende zijverhalen af, dit allemaal vermengd met wat er aan de hand was in de jaren '60. Racisme, de Black Panters, de fascistoïde methodes van de veiligheidsdiensten, de hippies, de drugs, de moord op Martin Luther King en Bobby Kennedy,... De serie wordt beter en beter naarmate ze evolueert. Goede psychedelische soundtrack ook. Zeker heen saai tijdverdrijf.

I see no reason to discuss the 2 seasons of this series separately because season 1 flows wirelessly into season 2.

At first I had a bit of a hard time with the main character, David Duchovny, because his face constantly reminded me of the X-Files (which I'm not a fan of at all).

But once I got used to his role as a cop, I have to say that he actually gives a strong performance.

Actually, the main story is about "The Manson Family" and the construction of their cult, culminating in the gruesome murder spree.

There are still a lot of fascinating side stories going on, all mixed in with what was going on in the '60s.

Racism, the Black Panthers, the fascist methods of the security services, the hippies, the drugs, the assassination of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy,...

The series gets better and better as it evolves.

Good psychedelic soundtrack too.

Definitely a boring pastime.
