In de docuserie over Roxy Dekker zie je een jonge vrouw toewerken naar haar eerste show in Paradiso. Je ziet twijfels, druk, oprechte emoties en ook heel duidelijk hoe de Nederlandse muziekindustrie werkt als je met de juiste achternamen binnenkomt. Roxy heeft talent, daar gaat het niet om. Ze zingt goed, heeft gevoel voor taal (ze klinkt ook lekker Goois, of als de mensen uit de enclave in oud zuid) en timing, en weet precies wat haar doelgroep wil horen. Maar de manier waarop haar carrière gelanceerd is, voelt allesbehalve spontaan. Haar producer is Julian Vahle, zoon van Linda de Mol. Haar label? Universal. Haar spotlights? Ruimschoots verlicht door media die ze van huis uit kent. De docu probeert haar verhaal te brengen als dat van een underdog die op eigen kracht doorbreekt. Maar wie goed kijkt, ziet vooral een perfect geregisseerde poplancering, keurig in elkaar gezet door een team met toegang tot de snelste routes naar succes. Dat maakt Roxy geen bedrieger, het maakt haar een symptoom. Van een industrie die ‘authenticiteit’ verkoopt, maar achter de schermen gewoon de kinderen van bekenden op het podium zet. En dat mag, maar laten we dan niet doen alsof het allemaal puur talent en toeval is. Alles in deze reeks laat zien: Roxy is niet per ongeluk beroemd geworden. Ze is gepland, gebouwd en gelanceerd tot in de puntjes. En dat werkt. Alleen voelt het soms meer als reclame dan als verhaal.

But the way her career launched feels anything but spontaneous. Her producer is Julian Vahle, son of Linda de Mol. Her label? Universal. Her spotlight? Ample by media she's familiar with.

The documentary attempts to present her story as that of an underdog who breaks through on her own. But if you look closely, you'll primarily see a perfectly orchestrated pop launch, meticulously crafted by a team with access to the fastest routes to success.

That doesn't make Roxy a fraud, it makes her a symptom. Of an industry that sells "authenticity," but behind the scenes simply puts the children of celebrities on stage. And that's okay, but let's not pretend it's all pure talent and chance.

Everything in this series shows: Roxy didn't become famous by accident. She was planned, built, and launched down to the last detail. And it works. Only sometimes it feels more like advertising than storytelling.
