In "A Dutchman in Paris" Philip Freriks examines the Parisian period of six Dutch painters in the capital of France. In the 19th century, the Dutch artists Van Spaendonck, Scheffer, Jongkind, Maris, Schwartze and Van Dongen were in the right place at the right place, Paris. If you wanted to make a difference in art at that time, you really had to be in Paris. They arrived there with a letter of recommendation and started the adventure. Philip himself lives in Paris and now sees the city through the eyes of an artist in the 19th century.
