Chief Inspector Benedikt Bissell lives with his wife Elisabeth and his three daughters Johanna, Maria and Eva in Berchtesgaden. In the past, he ran his department there almost single-handedly. Now he has a new colleague: Jerry Paulsen, who has moved south from Hamburg. Both are supported by Max Ruffer, who in addition to his police duties is also an amateur musician and part of a band. Benedikt and Jerry have differences of opinion and minor frictions: not only because of Jerry's open demeanor and his modern research methods, but also because he is the friend of Beissl's daughter Johanna.
