Van der Valk plot
Detective Piet van der Valk lives with his dog on a houseboat in Amsterdam. His close colleagues do not always have it easy with his hard attitude, but he finds the focus on work more important than making friends. He still gets along best with Lucienne Hassell, but for newcomer Job Cloovers, despite his invariably excellent work, he can't take a single compliment. The team faces some very different and tricky murder cases.

I've now seen the first four seasons. The crime plots are well-crafted. I accept the fact that the overall execution is a bit weaker. The occasional beautiful shots of Amsterdam make up for that. I find the cast downright strange and mediocre. The quality of the series certainly improves over the seasons. It's a shame that the final season adds a storyline in the form of Hendrik the pathologist. For me, this adds nothing and makes the series even more like a soap opera, which had already begun with Katie. Apparently, there will be a fifth season, because with the cliffhangers involving Hendrik and Katie, there's still plenty of story to tell.
