Detective Piet van der Valk lives with his dog on a houseboat in Amsterdam. His close colleagues do not always have it easy with his hard attitude, but he finds the focus on work more important than making friends. He still gets along best with Lucienne Hassell, but for newcomer Job Cloovers, despite his invariably excellent work, he can't take a single compliment. The team faces some very different and tricky murder cases.
