Die Protokollantin plot

Freya Becker, a note-taker for the Berlin police, lives a withdrawn and unobtrusive life. She has never dealt with the loss of her daughter Marie, who disappeared without a trace 11 years ago. When Freya is confronted with the case of Thilo Menken and the missing girl Sandra, and shortly afterwards also the suspected murderer of Marie is released, she decides to get to the bottom of the case.

Degelijk Duits drama over een moeder die blijft zoeken naar haar verdwenen dochter. Ohne Ecken und Kanten, soms een beetje traag maar wel weer goed geacteerd: Peter Kurth (Tatort, Babylon Berlin) steelt met zijn omvangrijke gestalte en markante kop de show. Minpunt vind ik dat het allemaal keurig binnen de lijntjes blijft; alle karakters zijn braaf en voorspelbaar, en wanneer ze dat niet zijn, zijn ze niet meer dan ondeugend. Behalve de dwaze moeder dan.

Solid German drama about a mother who continues to search for her missing daughter. Ohne Ecken und Kanten, sometimes a bit slow, but again well acted: Peter Kurth (Tatort, Babylon Berlin) steals the show with his voluminous stature and striking head. Downside I think it all stays neatly within the lines; all the characters are well-behaved and predictable, and when they're not, they're nothing more than mischievous. Except for the silly mother.

Uitstekende vijfdelige duitse miniserie, vooral goed uitgewerkt qua personages en spannend opgebouwd. De hoofdrol van Iris Berben is (opzettelijk) nogal kil en afstandelijk, maar bepaalde andere personages zijn zo innemend dat dit geen probleem vormt. Goed gemaakt en fraai in beeld gebracht, met een script dat bovengemiddeld boeiend is. Jammer van het onbestendige einde, dat geen sluitend antwoord geeft op de belangrijkste vraag die de serie oproept.

Excellent five-part German miniseries, especially well developed in terms of characters and excitingly constructed. Iris Berben's lead role is (deliberately) quite cold and distant, but certain other characters are so endearing that this isn't a problem. Well made and beautifully portrayed, with a script that is above average captivating. Too bad about the unsettled ending, which doesn't provide a conclusive answer to the main question the series raises.
