Coyote plot
Ben Clemens is a border patrol officer who will soon be retiring after 32 years. Then he discovers an underground tunnel used to smuggle black market goods from Mexico into the United States. He soon finds himself in the crosshairs of the criminal mastermind he's spent most of his career trying to get hold of.

Coyote is a nice 6 part thriller drama. Michael Chiklis (The Shield) plays Ben Clemens, a recently retired US Border Patrol agent who unwittingly gets into trouble when he tries to help a deceased colleague's widow across the border (in Mexico). The locals have some other plans for our Ben. Coyote's photography is razor-sharp: the mountains stand out against the blue skies, deserts are ocher yellow and desolate, and the brown metal borders cut through the landscape. The series has a kickstart, episodes 1 and 2 are smooth and entertaining. Tempo and setting are a bit reminiscent of Breaking Bad. Coyote then collapses, although we are treated to a single twist & turn.
At the same time, there is also a lot to criticize about Coyote; the characters are obligatory and stereotyped. Where real life has 50 shades of gray, Coyote is one-dimensional black and white. The series was originally set to run for 10 episodes and seems a bit rushed, like a stretched pilot for S2. If the level of the first episodes can be achieved, there is quite potential in a new season.
