Creator Diederik van Rooijen (Penoza, Anonymous) doesn't add his best series to his impressive oeuvre with Suga: Ride or Die. Suga is smoothly made, has an entertaining pace, and boasts two excellent leads in Gijs Naber (as Suga) and Sallie Harmsen (as his girlfriend Candy). The other acting—Elise Schaap, in particular, seems to have been put on tranquilizers—is inconsistent. The many well-trodden paths are not helped by the film's often childishly simple dialogue, while the emotions are overblown. In short: haven't we seen it all before—and better? Suga is routine, but lacks any soul.

Somewhere between a heavy, fateful drama and Bassie & Adriaan. The sad thing is that 'Suga' (2025) is actually a pretty slick production with beautiful atmospheric shots and excellent set design. At the better moments, that motorcycle club comes to life, full of extras in leather jackets on their Harleys. Gijs Naber is also good in his role as a troubled biker with a Catholic guilt complex. But then 'Suga' (2025) goes off in all directions with a stupid plot that throws in even more over-the-top drama than your average soap opera. It also doesn't help that you can see the big plot twists coming from miles away. I also don't quite understand why Dutch crime series have such a high "crime doesn't pay" content. You have to be able to enjoy your own pulp a little. We preach in church, after all.
