In Vriende we follow fifty-year-old Patrick who lives with his critically ill mother Ria in a simple working-class house in a pleasant working-class neighbourhood. Patrick is a boy with a big mouth and a small heart who takes good care of his sick mother; he gives her sherry, lights her butts and makes sure the oxygen tubes don't fall out of her nostrils. According to the doctor, Ria does not have long to live. And because she hasn't laughed since Patrick was born, Patrick decides to do something about it: he's going to make a sitcom to make his mother smile one more time in her life.
