The Residence plot

Cordelia Cupp is a consulting detective for the Metropolitan Police Department. Known for her wry wit, relentless pursuit of truth, and keen eye for human behavior, Cupp is the most sought-after detective in the world, and an avid bird watcher to boot. Special Agent Edwin Park is an FBI agent assigned to work with Cupp at a White House state dinner. Although Park is skeptical of Cupp’s unconventional methods, their dynamic promises to be as intriguing as the mystery they’re trying to unravel.

Eerste aflevering gezien, zeker niet vermoeiend of lollig, zit gewoon goed in elkaar. Vleugje luchtigheid in een leuke who dunnit sfeer. Ik ga snel verderkijken!

First episode seen, certainly not tiring or funny, just well put together. A touch of lightness in a nice who dunnit atmosphere. I'll watch further soon!

Heel veel minder komisch dan "Only Murders in the Building", waarnaar heel duidelijk gekeken is. Ik vond het "would be" grappig, karikaturaal (maar niet leuk) en vooral te lang. Op een gegeven moment was mijn aandacht gewoon weg. Wel leuk om Susan Kelechi Watson terug te zien na haar briljante rol in "This is us". Al met al: niet aan mij besteed.

Much less funny than "Only Murders in the Building", which was clearly watched. I found it "would be" funny, caricatural (but not funny) and especially too long. At a certain point my attention was just gone. Nice to see Susan Kelechi Watson again after her brilliant role in "This is us". All in all: not for me.

De editor heeft hier echt overuren gemaakt, kolere. Een onvervalste whodunnit, je moet er van houden. Nieuwe invalshoeken worden gezocht met de vogelmetafoor als duidelijke draad. Het is allemaal wel leuk en aardig, zeker in het begin nog. Maar gaandeweg merkte ik steeds meer moeite te krijgen om door de afleveringen heen te komen. Zeker de een-na-laatste was geen doen, teveel out-of-place. Het was allemaal teveel van hetzelfde. Soms ook letterlijk, want er worden heel veel (stukken van) scenes teruggehaald. Ik heb het idee dat de serie de helft korter kon. De humor was soms zeker geinig, maar soms ook te flauw of geforceerd. Beetje over-de-top-karakters kan geen kwaad soms, maar toch. Leuk trouwens om 'Balki' weer eens te zien (het duurde even voordat ik hem herkende). En zoals gezegd, het editen ging er wild aan toe. Niet alleen het eerdergenoemde overdaad aan mini-flashbacks, maar ook normale scenes die blijkbaar heel hip verknipt moesten worden. Leuk voor even, maar een heel seizoen is teveel van het goede. De 'gekke aanpak' van de rechercheur werkt maar deels. De laatste aflevering moet dan uiteraard alles samenkomen en dat was de interessante aflevering, maar niet perse vanwege 'de grote ontknoping'. Meer omdat het dan lekker wegkijkt wat er allemaal gebeurd/gezegd is, als een soort fijne samenvatting. En geeft het besef dat de helft van de serie overbodig was. Geinig, zeker voor de genreliefhebber, maar je moet er wel het geduld voor hebben.

A genuine whodunnit, you have to like it. New angles are sought with the bird metaphor as a clear thread. It's all nice and nice, certainly in the beginning. But as I went along I noticed that I had more and more trouble getting through the episodes. Certainly the penultimate one was not doable, too out-of-place.

It was all too much of the same. Sometimes literally, because a lot of (parts of) scenes are brought back. I have the idea that the series could have been half as short. The humor was sometimes certainly funny, but sometimes too weak or forced. A bit of over-the-top characters can't hurt sometimes, but still. Nice to see 'Balki' again by the way (it took me a while to recognize him).

And as said, the editing was wild. Not only the aforementioned excess of mini-flashbacks, but also normal scenes that apparently had to be cut up very hiply. Fun for a while, but a whole season is too much of a good thing. The 'crazy approach' of the detective only works partly.

The last episode must of course bring everything together and that was the interesting episode, but not necessarily because of 'the big denouement'. More because it is nice to watch what has happened/been said, as a kind of nice summary. And gives the realization that half of the series was superfluous.

Fun, especially for genre lovers, but you need to have the patience for it.
