Malcolm in the Middle plot

We see the world through the eyes of young Malcolm. He is extremely intelligent, but has quite a bit of trouble with his idiotic family. His mother Lois is a dominant woman with a strong opinion of her own, his father Hal is a huge nerd. And then he has three brothers with very different personalities.

Malcolm in the Middle season 7

The last season is often the season where the inspiration runs out, where the series is so heavily over the peak that one can't help but stop. Remarkably enough, the last season of this series is the best. No storyline around Francis here either, which is only good. Cranston is at his best as his role as father Hal is almost more stupid than ever, Dewey's (benign) manipulations are strong this season as well (particularly in the penultimate episode Morp) and the finale is unexpectedly strong with Mother Lois' monologue. 3*.

Malcolm in the Middle season 1

Especially nice because of Cranston who shows a very different role than what we have come to expect from him in recent years: namely a complete idiot. This leads to some hilarious scenes where the man apparently has no shame whatsoever like the scene where he explains relationships to his sons in episode 12, the roller skating scene in episode 13 and especially the car wash scene in episode 15.

The series often has some nice ideas and in a way can be seen as an American version of Flodder, because the family is quite antisocial. The biggest problem, however, is that the storylines of the individual episodes often feel incomplete. It sometimes stops a bit abruptly. That's why the series stays at 2* for me.
