The 10-part comedy Better Things was developed by stand-up comedian Louis CK and (voice) actress and lead actor Pamela Adlon. As Sam, Adlon plays a single mother of three (teenage) daughters. Sam's mother is her neighbor. Sam is the type of rough diamond with a sensitive nature. In the noisy and chaotic household, female bonding is sometimes hard to find. Better Things draws inspiration from contemporary and educational themes, and is funny, sharp and recognizable. But also very American.
The 10 episodes of the first season look like a collection of sketches with a continuous storyline. That is a strong find; ballast and daily continuity and routine are thrown overboard. The scenes focus on a special event, a family member, friend or a new flame for Sam. Better Things reminds me of Bodem by Eva Crutzen. With a similar playfulness that is infectious.
