Albatros plot

The series follows ten obese people who want to improve their lives and therefore participate in a slimming camp 'Albatros', in the Ardennes. However, upon arrival, it turns out that they are carrying excess pounds not only physically, but also emotionally. It quickly gets intense. The participants are physically challenged by a less subtle coach. But the group therapist also looks into their souls and tries to get them out of their comfort zone. The protective layers with which they kept the outside world and their past at a distance are thus removed one by one.

Goed geacteerd. De personen worden fijntjes uitgebeeld. Pakkend. Ik merk dat een aflevering nog dagen bij me nasmeult.

Well acted. The people are delicately portrayed. catchy. I notice that an episode smolders with me for days to come.

Misschien raar om zeggen in deze context, maar scenariogewijs had het me allemaal wat te weinig om het lijf. Ik zag vooral stereotypen voorbij komen, hoewel je doorheen de reeks meer sympathie ontwikkelt voor een aantal karakters. Niettemin moet gezegd dat de cameravoering van vakmanschap getuigt, en de soundtrack mag zelfs aanstekelijk heten. Dat alles neemt niet weg dat het een serie is om je doorheen te worstelen. Been there, done that? Kijk, alsof oud zeer en belegen grappen voor de verandering eens in een opgesmukt jasje worden overgedaan? Juist, het schoentje wringt daar waar de auteurs haar hebben bedacht, medunkt. 2,5*

Perhaps strange to say in this context, but scenario-wise it was all a bit too little for me. I mainly saw stereotypes passing by, although you develop more sympathy for a number of characters throughout the series.

Nevertheless, it must be said that the camerawork shows craftsmanship, and the soundtrack can even be called infectious. All that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a series to struggle through. Been there, done that? Look, as if old hurts and stale jokes are being redone for a change? Right, the shoe pinches where the authors conceived it, I think.

Ge kunt het niet gekker bedenken: een "welzijn- en afslankingskuuroord" in een dorp waar de bijzonderste gebeurtenis in het jaar een wedstrijd is voor veelvreterij op leven en dood. Een gekke komedie want al hebben al de "patiënten" (en niet alleen zij) in den Albatros allemaal een verleden waardoor ze aardig gefrustreerd, getraumatiseerd, getekend en doorgaans geen lieverdjes zijn, dit dramatisch aspect (naast te dik zijn, echtscheiding, schuldgevoelens, enz...) in de film komt niet als een mokerslag op de kijker neer of dat ge er emotioneel van wordt. Neen, het wordt doorgaans luchtig, bizar, wat overdreven en eigenlijk niet direct als geloofwaardig voorgesteld. Aldus een grappig gebeuren die bij vlagen wel aardig uit de hoek komt en waarin alle acteurs eigenlijk goed hun streng trekken. Geef de pluim aan Benny Claessens als broer Geoffrey en ook Isabelle van Hecke als Tine doet dat zeer goed. De dialogen kaderen hier perfect in en zijn vaak pittig. Aanvankelijk dacht ik een 3 zal wel volstaan, want zo diepgaand is het eigenlijk niet, maar het is van eigen bodem, draagt ook wel typische aspecten in zich en brengt u toch wel vaak aan het lachen en te bedenken dat moesten bijvoorbeeld de Fransen zo iets brengen met François Cluzet, Benoît Poelvoorde, Catherine Frot e.a., is het niet denkbeeldig dat ze zouden spreken van de film van het jaar. Denk maar aan "Bienvenue...chez les Chi'tis". Dus 3,5.

It couldn't get any crazier: a "well-being and slimming spa" in a village where the most special event of the year is a competition for gluttony to the death.
A crazy comedy because although all the "patients" (and not just them) in the Albatross all have a past that makes them quite frustrated, traumatized, scarred and usually not sweethearts, this dramatic aspect (besides being too fat, divorce, feelings of guilt, etc...) in the film does not hit the viewer like a sledgehammer or that it makes you emotional. No, it is usually light-hearted, bizarre, somewhat exaggerated and actually not immediately presented as credible.
Thus a funny event that at times comes out nicely and in which all the actors actually pull their strings well. Give the compliments to Benny Claessens as brother Geoffrey and Isabelle van Hecke as Tine is also doing very well.
The dialogues fit perfectly into this and are often spicy.
Initially I thought a 3 will suffice, because it is actually not that deep, but it is homegrown, also carries typical aspects and often makes you laugh and to think that, for example, the French had to do something like this With François Cluzet, Benoît Poelvoorde, Catherine Frot and others, it is not inconceivable that they would speak of the film of the year.
