The Legend of Vox Machina plot

A group of seven second-rate adventurers spend more time in the bar than traveling. In a desperate attempt to pay off a staggering debt to a bartender, the group ends up on a quest to save the realm of Exandria from fearsome monsters and evil magical powers. As they undertake this journey, the group members grow closer and closer to each other.

Goed, toen Covid-19 begon en we meer thuis begonnen te zitten, ben ik als fervent Dungeons & Dragons liefhebber helemaal in de ban van Critical Role geraakt (of zoals we het hier thuis 'absurd knappe mensen spelen ons favoriete spel' noemen) en ik keek zodoende ook echt heel erg uit naar hoe de animatieserie vormgegeven zou worden. Zonder het typische gegein wat je tijdens een D&D-sessie hebt, komen de vocale performances van de cast extra goed naar boven en blijft Mercer's verhaal goed overeind. Wat de serie extra fijn maakt: het is unrated gewelddadig. In eerste instantie was ik bang dat een Amazon het misschien ietwat zou willen 'kuisen' voor het grote publiek, maar niets is minder waar: naakt, gevloek en een enorme hoop over the top geweld zijn non-stop aanwezig. Vergelijkbaar met Amazon's eigen Invincible of Netflix' Castlevania is het niet voor de kleintjes weggelegd. Wat mij betreft een van de best geslaagde animatieseries van de afgelopen tijd.

Well, when Covid-19 started and we started to sit at home more, I, as an avid Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast, fell completely under the spell of Critical Role (or as we call it here at home 'absurdly handsome people play our favorite game') and I was therefore really looking forward to how the animated series would be designed. Without the typical fun you have during a D&D session, the vocal performances of the cast come out extra well and Mercer's story holds up well. What makes the series extra nice: it is unrated violent. At first I was afraid that an Amazon might want to 'clean it up' for the general public, but nothing could be further from the truth: nudity, swearing and a huge amount of over the top violence are non-stop. Similar to Amazon's own Invincible or Netflix's Castlevania, it's not for the little ones. In my opinion one of the best animated series of recent times.
