The second series of Wednesday hit Netflix this week and although reviews are mixed-to-positive, critics and fans have all been making the same complaint.
The first series, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams of The Addams Family, received acclaim and became the second most-watched English-language series on Netflix.
It received two Golden Globe nominations - Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress (Television Series Musical or Comedy) for Ortega - and won four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Tim Burton directed half of the episodes and serves as an executive producer.
One complaint fans and critics are making about the second series is the episode split as the first half of the series has aired, but the second half won't air in September.
Wednesday season two reviews
"There’s a lot of promise here, despite the season split that, instead of enhancing the story, ends up curbing the show’s momentum." - Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence.
"Wednesday is the extreme version of the alienated adolescent. But the series’ creators... likely know the limitations of their material, which is why they lard the story with so many backstories, useless digressions and subplots." - John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal.
"The absent attention to detail beyond what’s stylish, combined with the neat-and-tidy aesthetic mandated for broadly appealing teen dramas, puts the focus back on what Season 2 is trying to say, which isn’t much." - Ben Travers of IndieWire.
"In the middle of it all, meanwhile, is Ortega’s Wednesday, whose charisma could power a thousand hearses. Not that she’d appreciate our enthusiasm." - Sarah Dempster of The Guardian.
"It may not reach the heights of “Stranger Things,” but with Tim Burton returning to direct two of the four episodes, it’s a consistently entertaining watch." - Michael Ghanen of The Wrap.
"Re-contextualizing all of the Addams relatives into an exceptional world, in which what once made them creepy, kooky and altogether ooky is commonplace, drains them of any distinction at all." - Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter.
