A Spy among Friends plot

The notorious Kim Philby is the most notorious collaborator with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. As a Soviet mole, he divulged many secrets of early Cold War British operations. One of Philby's closest friends was Nicholas Elliott, who worked in MI6's British Secret Service; this one thought he knew Philby better than anyone. When he discovers he never knew him at all, their already complex friendship becomes increasingly strained.

Atmospheric drama cannot be completely convincing.

The six-part British true-life drama A Spy Among Friends about the British spy Kim Philby (played by Guy Pearce) in the 1960s, is reminiscent of The Ipcress File, Spy City, Spy/Master and the work of John Le Carré (Tinker Tailor Soldier spy). In A Spy Among Friends we see a lot of silent play, pensive looks, posting secret agents, suggestion, flashbacks and a heavy dose of double meaning. But unfortunately little tension.

The slow A Spy Among Friends is based on the book by Ben Macintyre. The best role is reserved for a fictional character: Lily Thomas, subdued by Anna Maxwell-Martin. That is striking because the drama surrounding the British 'spy of the century' and his friendship with Nicholas Elliott (an excellent Damian Lewis - Billions, Homeland) has enough potential in itself. Who works for who now, is Philby loyal to Elliott, or is it all different? The puzzle is only put together in the last two episodes. The hope for an exciting spy thriller has long since gone up in cigarette smoke.

stefano summarizes it well here. The series could not convince me completely. Excellent acting by Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis, and especially by Anna Maxwell-Martin as the persistent interrogator. No, this story does not have to rely on action, it is more like a kind of chess game with double meanings and the constant question of who is cheating on whom. I have to say that scene with the bus went through marrow and bone. When Damian Lewis played Nicolas Elliot, Sir Alec Guinness kept coming to mind.
