Soul America plot

Soul music took off in America in the 1950s when Motown marketed the artists through records and TV appearances. At that time, the artists were discriminated against as much as the 'ordinary' black population. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, persistent inequality, poverty and racism hardened the music style. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a new kind of soul emerged, slow jams and sexual healing.

Conventionele maar beknopte docu over de opkomst van de Amerikaanse soul tijdens de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw. Het verhaal begint in de jaren '50 met de opkomst van grote sterren uit de gospel en jazz via het live circuit en eindigt in de jaren '80 met de opkomst van conventionele popsterren met een 'soul' profiel zoals Lionel Richie en Whitney Houston. Bekende namen als Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye (zijn Oostendse jaren!) en Luther Vandross passeren allemaal de revue. Enkel in de laatste aflevering kwam er af en toe een naam voorbij die me niet bekend was, zoals Millie Jackson (ga ik zometeen eens opzoeken!) en Peabo Bryson (sprak me veel minder aan). Grootste minpunt is de beperkte duur waardoor er uiteraard maar kort kan ingegaan worden op artiesten wiens carrière interessant genoeg is om minstens een vol uur aan te wijden. The biggest downside is the limited duration, which means that it is of course only possible to briefly discuss artists whose career is interesting enough to devote at least a full hour to it. An absolute giant like Stevie Wonder got away with it
