If you rely on a first impression, you will undoubtedly find this old-fashioned, but it is so well written and acted. Life in a Limburg rural village in the year 1914 is brought to life, with its narrow-mindedness, its conviviality and its gossip. The most beautiful secondary characters are the rough farmer Bonte and the sensitive Miete. Different approaches to faith are discussed. Chaplain Odekerke is closely involved in the lives of his parishioners, while the unapproachable pastor proclaims Catholic truths from a throne. Sociologically, there is the transition from an agricultural to an industrial society, with the rise of mining. Historically there is the beginning of the First World War and the mobilization, but that is far from the bed.
At the time, six million people a week watched this, viewing figures that one can only dream of now. My memory of it was very vague and incomplete, but words like tonsuur and guardian I learned from this as a child. Jo De Meyere turns out to be a very versatile actor, if you know that he later also played completely different roles.
