A Dance to the Music of Time plot

Nicholas Jenkins befriends Kenneth Widmerpool, a boy who is often teased at school. Later, when he and his friends are in their thirties, the marriages deteriorate and the youthful optimism disappears like snow in the sun. In World War II, Nicholas is in the military and leaves his pregnant wife, named Isobel, alone. Years later, Nicholas returns. Together with Isobel he moves to the countryside.
