These three episodes are a sequel to En Pilgrims Död (2013), featuring the same detectives from Leif G.W. Persson's books, but they also make a great standalone miniseries. The story jumps back and forth between three different time periods.
In 1989, the murder of civil servant Kjell Ohlsson is investigated by Evert Bäckström, a homophobic, alcoholic, and obese man. Young policewoman Jeanette Eriksson disagrees with his findings, but as a rookie, she can't challenge her superior.
In the present (nutid), Lars Martin Johansson (LMJ) becomes the new head of Säpo, the Swedish National Security Service. After new information surfaces about the victim from twenty years ago, the case is reopened. Jeanette Eriksson is once again part of the investigating team.
In 1975, the West German embassy in Stockholm was occupied by the Red Army Faction—a historical fact. According to this fictional series, the terrorists were assisted by four Swedes. Kjell Ohlsson and two others are known, but investigators must continue their search for "the fourth man"—who ultimately turns out to be a woman.
What starts as a typical whodunit becomes a complex political thriller with ethical dilemmas and layered characters. The actors are excellent. Interrogations are interspersed with action and atmospheric cityscapes. This one ranks among the finest Scandinavian crime series.
