The documentary follows Renate Rubinstein, who, as a Jewish refugee, lost her father in Auschwitz and eventually returned to the Netherlands as an influential columnist. She pioneered female opinion-forming and was the first to write about personal topics, Israel, the environment, and illness. Rubinstein was known for her sharp writing, her intuitive, sometimes controversial contributions, and her defense of the controversial Friedrich Weinreb. Even after her death, she continued to cause a stir, partly through the revelation of her secret relationship with Simon Carmiggelt.
