Theo van Gogh, de Hunkering plot

Twenty years ago, Theo van Gogh was murdered in broad daylight. The world was shocked. Not only because of the gruesome image of Theo under a white sheet on the cycle path, but also because of the motive for the murder. Theo was an enfant terrible his whole life, his idea that it is a fundamental right to be allowed to insult earned him many friends, but also at least as many enemies. One of those enemies proved fatal to him. In this documentary series, director David de Jongh paints an unvarnished portrait of perhaps the most provocative personality in recent Dutch history.

For me, biographies are at their best when they are about elusive and slightly unbearable people. Difficult people and not necessarily role models or heroes. In that sense, the four-part mini-series 'Theo van Gogh, the Hunger' (2024) works perfectly as a layered period document about Theo van Gogh and his idiosyncratic approach to freedom of expression. A loutish asshole who wanted to settle accounts with his safe Wassenaar environment? An anti-Semite or a racist, or someone who was open to the multicultural society? A principled freethinker who used his own freedom of expression to honor his uncle's death in the resistance? Or was Theo trying to emerge from the shadow of the world-famous painter Vincent van Gogh? It makes 'Theo van Gogh, the Hunger' (2024) a warm portrait of a sensitive man who perhaps never understood why he had to so obsessively push the boundaries.
