Again a series that I went into blank, but what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. I've heard a lot of people talk about this series and so wanted to give it a try. The most surprising element in the series is lead actress Jodie Comer. I didn't know her yet, but she can act. She reminded me of a combination of The Joker (The Dark Knight) and Saga (The Bridge). Sandra Oh also knows how to play a good role.

The series manages to combine the tension and drama with a cynical form of humor, something I can always appreciate. I liked the first half of the season a lot better, due to the fact that the main characters hadn't met yet. So I'm wondering if I'm going to like the second season. We're going to experience it!

Smooth, dryly comical English thriller series, not too serious in approach but exciting and fun enough to keep you interested. And the two lead actresses are fine, with Jodie Comer in particular on a roll as the completely bonkers hit man Villanelle. A bit silly and exaggerated here and there, but in general this is cleverly put together, with funny dialogues and lots of nice supporting roles. A second season is not necessary for me, but is now available.

A two-way cat-and-mouse game ensues between Eve and Villanelle. It is not always clear who is chasing whom. Eve wants retaliation, but as she unravels the perpetrator's identity, she also begins to feel a sense of attraction. Villanelle has a psychopathic personality: no empathy, no pangs of conscience. Yet you can easily sympathize with her. Her victims are unsympathetic and she turns every murder into a work of art: original, eye-catching and leaving behind some kind of signature or visual cue. The title can be translated as killing Eve or killing Eve, perhaps a deliberate ambiguity.

Jodie Comer plays a great role. Her face is like rubber; she radiates self-confidence; she has mastered the Russian accent. Sandra Oh, playing the more normal title character, expresses conflicting feelings, a mixture of doubt and determination. Strong women dominate, but the Dane Kim Bodnia also has a great role as Villanelle's Russian mentor.

The crazy outfits and disguises of Villanelle are attractive. The well-chosen locations are spread over various European countries. Eve and Villanelle are rarely in the same scene together, but there are matchcuts that suggest a band, eg. Eve in bed followed by Villanelle in bed. It is beautifully captured, with surprising perspectives and slow camera movements. The music adds something. The story is completely unrealistic, but that doesn't matter. It's a fantasy that targets the killer in each of us.
