Gossip Girl tells the story of several wealthy teenagers living on the Upper East Side of New York City. While they are about to go to the most important universities, all sorts of things are happening among themselves. The big questions aren't 'Who graduates with the best grade?', but rather, 'Who has the most money, who's hanging out with whom, who's the Queen Bee of the Constance Billard, and who's going to the Prom with whom? ' Who better to inform you about everyone that matters than Gossip Girl?

Fijn: de schooltoestanden verdwijnen grotendeels uit het verhaal. Goeie zaak, want het merendeel van de cast is toch echt wel te oud om ergens tussen middelbaar en hoger onderwijs te bengelen. Minder fijn: enerzijds blijven die jongvolwassenen zich als kleine kinderen gedragen wanneer het gaat over relaties en jaloezie en ruzie maken. Anderzijds worden hen dan functies in de schoenen geschoven - bijvoorbeeld Chuck, 18 of 19 jaar oud en CEO van Bass Industries en baas van het Empire Hotel - waarvoor een zekere volwassenheid gewoon nodig is. Met andere woorden: de serie blijft zich op een of andere manier vooral (en teveel) richten op een heel jong publiek, en slaagt er op die manier niet in om zelfs maar een heel klein beetje 'echt' te lijken. Grappig hoe er dan bijvoorbeeld met diepe halsuitsnijdingen en pop-up beha's nadruk gelegd wordt op de borsten van de jongedames, maar er op geen enkel moment ook maar íets van bloot te zien is. Twee mensen die wakker worden na een van de vele vrijpartijen ? Zelfs dàn draagt de dame nog steeds haar beha en slaapkleedje. Tja, de filmkeuring... Bovendien: brieven die steeds toevallig gevonden worden, babbels en telefoongesprekken die gehoord worden door iemand die net achter de hoek staat,... Dat soort van clichés begint bij momenten toch wel te irriteren. Wat de acteurs betreft: een paar doen het heel degelijk - de personages van Dan en Blair vooral. Maar er zijn er ook een aantal die op heel bedenkelijk niveau spelen. Chuck en Serena: de overacting is voortdurend aanwezig. Nog twee seizoenen te gaan. Het is niet zo dat ik er tegenop zie; maar dat 'verstand op nul en lekker ontspannen en genieten'-gevoel begint wel een beetje te verdwijnen.

Nice: the school conditions largely disappear from the story. Good thing, because the majority of the cast is really too old to dangle somewhere between secondary and higher education.

Less pleasant: on the one hand, those young adults continue to behave like small children when it comes to relationships and jealousy and arguing.

On the other hand, they are then placed in positions - for example Chuck, 18 or 19 years old and CEO of Bass Industries and boss of the Empire Hotel - which simply require a certain maturity.

In other words, the series somehow continues to focus mainly (and too much) on a very young audience, and thus fails to seem even the slightest bit 'real'.

Funny how, for example, with deep necklines and pop-up bras, emphasis is placed on the breasts of the young ladies, but at no time is there a trace of it exposed. Two people waking up after one of the many lovemaking? Even then, the lady is still wearing her bra and nightdress. Well, the movie rating...

Moreover: letters that are always found by chance, chats and telephone conversations that are heard by someone just behind the corner,... Those kinds of clichés start to irritate at times.

As for the actors, a few do it very well - especially Dan and Blair's characters. But there are also some who play at a very dubious level. Chuck and Serena: The overacting is always there.

Two more seasons to go. It's not that I'm looking forward to it; but that 'mind at zero and relax and enjoy' feeling is starting to disappear a bit.
