The Good Doctor plot

A young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome, Shaun Murphy, moves from a small town in the United States to work at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Within the hospital the question arises: can a person who does not have the qualities to empathize with other people save lives? Aaron Glassman, the hospital's director, tries to convince his colleagues to hire Shaun. Shaun uses his impressive medical skills to save lives and challenge his skeptical colleagues.

Leuke ziekenhuis-serie van de makers van House M.D., vlot gemaakt en bevolkt door sympathieke personages. Eén en ander is aan de oppervlakkige en soms onwaarschijnlijke kant, maar de verhaallijnen zijn over het algemeen boeiend genoeg en de personages zo innemend dat de serie erg lekker wegkijkt. Kortom, precies de juiste mengeling van soap, humor en drama. De formule van House M.D. is duidelijk te herkennen, maar wat maakt het uit. Beter goed van jezelf gejat dan slecht door jezelf bedacht!

Nice hospital series from the makers of House MD, smoothly made and populated by sympathetic characters. This is on the superficial and sometimes improbable side, but the storylines are generally interesting enough and the characters so engaging that the series is very nice to watch. In short, just the right mix of soap, humor and drama. House MD's formula is clearly recognizable, but who cares. Better stolen good from yourself than bad invented by yourself!

Ziekenhuis serie met de twist van een autistische arts in opleiding. Zou mij normaliter niet zo aanspreken maar Freddy Highmore draagt de serie echt. Andere karakters zijn ook interessant en je leert ze door de afleveringen heen beter kennen. Ondanks soms wat zware onderwerpen kijkt het makkelijk weg.

Hospital series with the twist of an autistic doctor in training. Would normally not appeal to me but Freddy Highmore really carries the series. Other characters are also interesting and you get to know them better throughout the episodes. Despite some heavy subjects, it is easy to look away.

Nog niet het origineel gezien, noch House die dezelfde creators heeft blijkbaar. Wel tegelijk bezig met het kijken van Grey's Anatomy, wat een serie is die ook over chirurgen gaat, maar die een andere toon aanslaat. Wel hebben beide series de volgende opmerkelijke overeenkomst: de chirurgen zijn tegelijk internist en radioloog, wat vrreemd is. Ook heb ik veel ziektegevallen in deze serie ook al gezien in Grey's Anatomy. Dat hoeft natuurlijk niet te betekenen dat men bij de laatstgenoemde serie afgekeken heeft, maar dat men uit de werkelijkheid dezelfde gevallen als interessant voor tv heeft geselecteerd. Maar toch voelt het een beetje als copy paste. In ieder geval draait het hier minder om soapachtige aspecten, maar meer om een briljante dokter die echter autisme heeft en die barrière dus moet overwinnen. Het is een interessant en origineel uitgangspunt en wordt aardig uitgewerkt. Verder zijn de karakters hier vriendelijker; iedereen heeft goede bedoelingen, niemand is inherent onaardig, wat voor een goed gevoel zorgt, maar niet helemaal realistisch is. Meer onrealistische zaken: het ziekenhuis dat er wel erg gestileerd en clean uitziet, en het belachelijke 3D moment waarin een geval gesimuleerd werd. Volledig ongeloofwaardig. Verder wordt er een tussenshot van buiten het ziekenhuis de hele tijd gerecycled (tot en met het laatste seizoen op het moment van schrijven, dus seizoen zes). Een beetje goedkoop. Wat verder niet helemaal bevalt zijn de flashbacks naar de jeugd van de hoofdpersonage. Ik begrijp dat het moet omwille van het drama, maar die momenten irriteerden me. Maar over het algemeen best aardig. 2,5*.

Haven't seen the original yet, nor House apparently has the same creators. At the same time watching Grey's Anatomy, which is a series that is also about surgeons, but that strikes a different tone. However, both series have the following remarkable similarity: the surgeons are both internists and radiologists, which is strange. I have also seen many cases of illness in this series in Grey's Anatomy. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that people have copied the latter series, but that the same cases have been selected from reality as interesting for TV. But it still feels a bit like copy paste.

In any case, this is less about soap opera-like aspects, and more about a brilliant doctor who has autism and therefore has to overcome that barrier. It is an interesting and original premise and is nicely developed. Furthermore, the characters here are friendlier; everyone has good intentions, no one is inherently unkind, which makes for a good feeling, but isn't entirely realistic. More unrealistic things: the hospital that looks very stylized and clean, and the ridiculous 3D moment in which a case was simulated. Completely unbelievable. Furthermore, a cut shot from outside the hospital is recycled throughout (through the final season at the time of writing, so season six). A bit cheap.

What is also not entirely pleasing are the flashbacks to the youth of the main character. I understand it has to be for the sake of drama, but those moments irked me. But overall pretty nice. 2.5*.
