Plottechnisch een vrij aardige (en spannende) serie, echter 't algemene probleem is nogal dat de hoofdkarakters vrij kil en afstandelijk zijn en 't allemaal vrij humorloos is; ook in de latere seizoenen. Wellicht dat ie typische jaren '80 Koude Oorlog setting er zich gewoon niet voor leent, maar 't zorgt ervoor dat ik na drie seizoenen nog steeds niet helemaal geïnvesteerd ben in 't leven en (mogelijk fatale) lot van de Jennings. Dochter Paige is 't overduidelijke hart van de serie, en gelukkig lijkt zij eindelijk in 't vierde seizoen een meer prominente rol te krijgen. Hoop ook dat zender FX dit niet verder gaat uitrekken dan vijf seizoenen, ie 'close calls' met de FBI beginnen onderhand ook een beetje vermoeiend te worden; zeker met ie haast blinde buurman Stan.

Plot-wise it's a pretty nice (and exciting) series, but the general problem is that the main characters are quite cold and aloof and it's all quite humorless; also in the later seasons. Maybe the typical '80s Cold War setting just doesn't lend itself to it, but it makes sure that after three seasons I'm still not fully invested in the life and (possibly fatal) fate of the Jennings.

Daughter Paige is the obvious heart of the series, and luckily she finally seems to be getting a more prominent role in the fourth season. Also hope that channel FX will not stretch this beyond five seasons, ie 'close calls' with the FBI are starting to get a bit tiresome by now; especially with his almost blind neighbor Stan.

The Americans is een ijzersterke cold war spionageserie over KGBagenten die in de Amerikaanse samenleving geïnfiltreerd zijn, zogenaamde sleepers dus. Deze sleepers Phillip (Matthew Rhys en Elizabeth(Keri Russell) Jennings zijn op het oog doodnormale Amerikanen met een gezin en een baan maar voeren ondertussen spionageklussen en 'wetwork' uit namens de KGB. Het fenomeen sleeperagent van de KGB is al vaker uitgewerkt in films gedurende de koude oorlog. Soms spannend zoals in Telefon, soms actierijk zoals in Salt en soms zeer matig uitgewerkt zoals in Little Nikita. The Americans is zowel spannend als actierijk en ook nog eens zeer goed uitgewerkt. Hij komt wat moeilijk op gang waardoor je niet direct lekker in de serie komt. Dit komt mede doordat de personages wat kil zijn zoals Jacobine_ Rodijk ook al zei. Ook zijn ze op een enkeling na, allen zeer onsympathiek. Zit je er eenmaal in dan laat hij je ook niet los. Het helpt misschien ook omdat ik de '80's en de koude oorlog bewust heb meegemaakt waardoor ik ook veel herken. Zoals de spanning rondom de aanslag op Reagan. Even leek WO III toen heel dichtbij. De cast is uitstekend met o.a. Noah Emmerich, Frank Langella, Richard Thomas, Olek Krupa, Holly Taylor, Margot Martindale en Annet Mahendru zetten geloofwaardige characters neer. Matthew Rhys en vooral Keri Russell zijn top. Wie had er immers ooit gedacht dat er in die brave Felicity een bikkelharde KGB killer verborgen zat? The Americans is een aanrader voor iedereen die de Cold War heeft meegemaakt of liefhebbers van spionage. Gewoon een dijk van een serie, echt de moeite waard.

The Americans is a strong cold war spy series about KGB agents who have infiltrated American society, so-called sleepers. These sleepers Phillip (Matthew Rhys and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) Jennings are seemingly normal Americans with a family and a job, but meanwhile perform espionage and wetwork on behalf of the KGB.

The KGB's sleeper agent phenomenon has been elaborated on several times in films during the Cold War. Sometimes exciting like in Telefon, sometimes action-packed like in Salt and sometimes very poorly developed like in Little Nikita. The Americans is both exciting and action-packed and also very well developed. It's a bit difficult to get going so you don't get right into the series. This is partly because the characters are a bit cold, as Jacobine_ Rodijk also said. Except for a few, they are all very unsympathetic. Once you're in it, he won't let you go. It may also help because I consciously experienced the '80s and the cold war, so that I also recognize a lot. Like the tension surrounding the attack on Reagan. WWIII seemed very close at the time. The cast is excellent with, among others, Noah Emmerich, Frank Langella, Richard Thomas, Olek Krupa, Holly Taylor, Margot Martindale and Annet Mahendru creating believable characters. Matthew Rhys and especially Keri Russell are top notch. After all, who would have ever thought that there was a rock hard KGB killer hidden in that good Felicity?

The Americans is a must for anyone who has experienced the Cold War or fans of espionage. Just one hell of a series, really worth it.
