Scriptwriter Maaik Krijgsman (Vechtershart) and director Dana Nechushtan (Hollands Hoop, Overspel) have set the bar high with the eight-part drama series Elixer; an international series about big pharma. In a mix of Succession, Swanenburg and Dopesick, it revolves around the company of the Rombauts family. After a hunting accident, pater familias and CEO Ludo Rombauts (a convincing Wim Opbrouck) wants to hand over the baton to daughter Isabelle (Hanna Verboom), who wants to change things with a critical eye.

Due to the high tempo, the international connections (including China) and the overcrowded scenario, Elixer quickly becomes top-heavy. The many subplots about family members are also not all interesting or credible. Still, the story is sufficiently captivating and the aspirations burst from the screen. With current themes - illegal pill use and the morality of developing (new) medicines - the makers deserve praise. And an extra half star. After De F*ckulteit, Elixer is an ambitious addition to the Dutch series offering.

What a cringe-worthy acting, not to be seen. And a hopeless script, this was worked on for 10 years I read in an interview with the director........well I couldn't see it.

Dutch productions rarely get enough space to realize grand ambitions. Or like 'Elixer' (2025) with Big Pharma sketches an intriguing clash between ethics, scientific progress and business interests. Slickly shot with beautiful drone shots and lively street scenes. Especially because of the sense of scale with different locations all over the world to bring globalization to life. Still strong atmospheric sketches of a Limburg family business with a Catholic guilt complex. But the overcomplicated plot in 'Elixer' (2025) provides little connection with the Rombauts family. The different characters are rarely together in the same room. As a result, shifts in loyalty feel forced and far-fetched. Ultimately, the moralistic message is more important than the crackling tension between the family members.
