Eileen Fitzgerald is a New York journalist who moves to Alaska for a clean start and seeks redemption, both personally and professionally. She joins a daily subway newspaper in Anchorage, brought to her by Stanley Cornik, an editor at the new spot who worked with her 20 years ago. At her new job, she takes on a long-held case of the death of a missing woman who was kidnapped during her teenage years. As Elieen proceeds with the investigation, she discovers certain clues that give more angles and explanations to the case because the police and courts are not active in prosecuting justice.

Alaska Daily van bedenker Tom McCarthy (The Loudest Voice) vertelt het verhaal van journalist Eileen Fitzgerald (Hillary Swank) die na een schandaal over machtsmisbruik wordt gecanceld. Fitzgerald maakt een nieuwe start bij de regionale krant Alaska Daily. In the middle of 'nowhere'; Anchorage. Rode draad in dit drama is de zoektocht naar een vermist inheems meisje. We zagen de sterke authentiek-culturele insteek eerder in Three Pines en Midnattsol/Midnight Sun. Op de redactie vormen de regionale nieuwsfeiten elke aflevering aanleiding voor onderzoek, deadlines en verslaglegging. De komst van de horkerige journaliste Fitzgerald zorgt voor wat levendigheid onder het verder überbrave journaille. Alaska Daily mag je naast braaf ook gezapig noemen en kabbelt rustig 11 (!) afleveringen voort. Er zijn weinig momenten dat de serie je raakt als kijker. Bovendien is Hillary Swank niet de actrice met veel charisma, een groot manco voor een hoofdrolspeler. Alaska Daily is een serie die in alles keurig binnen de lijntje blijft maar nergens volledig weet te overtuigen.

In addition to being good, Alaska Daily can also be called sluggish and quietly ripples on for 11 (!) episodes. There are few moments that the series touches you as a viewer. Moreover, Hillary Swank is not the actress with a lot of charisma, a big flaw for a leading actor. Alaska Daily is a series that stays neatly within the line in everything but never fully convinces.

Prima serie over een succesvolle journaliste (Hilary Swank) die na een schandaal in New York noodgedwongen moet uitwijken naar een kleine krant in Anchorage, Alaska. Swank is heerlijk bot in de hoofdrol en ziet zich omringd door een prima supporting cast. Regisseur en producent Tom McCarthy (oa bekend van de film Spotlight) zorgt voor een uitgebalanceerde mix van drama, humor en spanning, met goed uitgewerkte personages en intelligente plotlijnen. Hier en daar maakt de serie zich er iets te makkelijk vanaf, maar de sympathieke hoofdpersonen en de eersteklas dialogen tillen de boel met gemak boven de middelmaat uit.

Excellent series about a successful journalist (Hilary Swank) who is forced to move to a small newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska after a scandal in New York. Swank is wonderfully blunt in the lead role and is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast. Director and producer Tom McCarthy (known from the movie Spotlight, among others) provides a balanced mix of drama, humor and tension, with well-developed characters and intelligent plot lines. Here and there the series makes it a little too easy, but the sympathetic main characters and the first-class dialogues easily lift things above average.
