Annika plot

The sharp, witty and enigmatic Inspector Annika Strandhed leads the new specialist Marine Homicide Unit (MHU). He is tasked with investigating unexplained, brutal and seemingly unfathomable murders taking place on Scotland's waterways. While Annika manages a team that is as brilliant as it is unconventional, she also has an equally brilliant and complex teenage daughter under her wing.

The six-part crime series Annika starts as a real Scandi Noir: the recognizable opening tune (did I hear this before?), the drone shots of sharply marked roads between gloomy forests, Annika Strandhed and her Norwegian origin... Annika is, however, a thoroughly British drama series starring Nicola Walker (Annika Strandhed). Based on the successful BBC podcast of the same name, the series gives an insight into the life of Annika, who works at the Marine Homicide Unit. So many murders. On, near or in the water. Unfortunately everything is solved within an episode (45 minutes) and therefore seems rather simple and fragmented. The crimes are only a peg for the development of the main characters. It never gets exciting.

Dramatically, Annika is better, but clings to clichés; Annika is single (romance!), with an adolescent daughter (problems!) and is clumsy in her new leadership role (dynamics in the workplace !). What does not help at all is that the fourth wall is broken in Annika. We know the main character talking directly to the camera from the comedies Fleabag and Dirty Lines. Excellent examples, where the technique was functional. I've never seen it in a crime series. Fortunately, because in Annika it is not a success. What remains is a tension-free crime series that, despite Silvie Furneaux's acting as Annika's daughter Morgan, does not survive.

What a painfully bad series this is. Normally I like to see Walker act, but here she just sinks with the rest. I have a confession to make, I haven't seen the last episode, I had tormented myself long enough with this very weak misery.
