Vigil plot

The nuclear submarine HMS Vigil is patrolling British waters from an undisclosed location, ready to defend the country and ready to launch a thermonuclear warhead in case of danger. When a crew member is found dead on board, Police Detective Amy Silva is tasked with investigating whether there is more to death than an apparent heroin overdose. Expectations were high; from the Line of Duty and Bodyguard production team! It can't quite live up to that expectation, but Vigil is a fine underwater murder mystery. The BBC has put Vigil firmly in the market, production values are high and there is an all star cast available. Big budget here!

The series starts off smoothly, with good visual effects. DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones, donning her usual pained look), investigates a murder on a nuclear submarine. Silva aboard the Vigil, who gets help ashore from colleague Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie). Scotland. Including, of course, the necessary communication obstacles between the two.

As whodunnit Vigil isn't very special, but the oppressive situation and constant threat on board give the series an extra dimension. The background story about Silva's private situation seems a bit raked together and is not very convincing. Still, Vigil is a fine submarine thriller. With red herrings in the North Sea, Suranne Jones and music by Glenn Gregory, from the band Heaven 17.

A decidedly unusual location for a whodonit, although a lot - actually the whydonit - takes place outside the Vigil.

A lot of twists and turns in the investigation, many involved and suspects as it should be in such series and an action-packed and exciting ending. Some political reservations also to close such as whether world peace should be enforced with threat.

Lead actress Suranne Jones may have more of an office clerk/housewife than a police officer who arrests in a convincing voice and immediately points out duties, but she is not a caricature, which does show up in some series. The links to personal situations are not always successful and fascinating, but in addition to serious professionalism, there are also human aspects.

Have a narrow 4 for it.
