Selena Quintanilla is a phenomenon in Latino circles who in the Netherlands is perhaps best comparable to André Hazes. Set up Hazes in a Dutch pub and you get atmosphere. Put on Selena at a Latino party and the party really gets going. I know this from personal experience because my childhood sweetheart was a Latina. Selena was only 23 years old when her fan club president shot her to death over a business conflict in 1995. In the short time she lived, however, she managed to make a huge impact with her singing skills and disarming personality. Because of this she is still known as the Queen of the Tejanosound. Shortly after her death, a biopic has appeared with a then relatively unknown Jennifer Lopez as Selena. So now there is this series that goes a little deeper into the life of her but also of her family. Unfortunately, the shoe pinches here too. Selena was a nice, sweet and spontaneous girl but very good. It's basically just a long drawn-out success story that never really gets exciting. Actually, the feature film was already good enough. Lead actress Christian Serratos is not bad but has the same shortcomings as Jennifer Lopez had before, too much diva look and too little Girl Next Door. That Girl Next Door look is what made Selena Quintanilla so special. The soundtrack of the series is certainly worth mentioning. Not only do you hear the hits of Selena y Los Dinos, but also well-known songs from other artists, especially from the 80's and 90's. I hope the series contributes to bringing Selena's music to the attention of a new generation because she deserves it, but as a series itself it's all a bit bland. It feels like you are watching a slideshow or video of someone else's vacation. You should have been there.

Saw the movie two years ago, which I complained about was too long. Strangely enough, this series, which lasts much longer, suited me a bit better. I don't remember the movie very well, but from what I can recall, that movie focuses mainly on Selena herself, while this series focuses a lot more on her family and other band members and that's interesting too. However, the interactions between family are portrayed very harmoniously. There are fights and disagreements sometimes, but it's all spoken so rationally that it comes across as a bit unbelievable. Another difference with the film is a greater focus on the songs and how they were written, which also appeals to me, also because in the meantime I also became more acquainted with Selena's music, with the effect that the series encourages her to listen to her music more. Overall, I like this series better than the movie. 3*.
