Celblok H plot

In Cell Block H we follow Suus. Suus is suspected of attempted murder of her husband. In Cell Block H by PI de Banckert, she is followed from the day she moves into prison. The emotional farewell to her daughter and the first emotionally charged encounters with the other women of prison de Banckert, every emotion passes by. Soon Suus unwittingly becomes involved in a power struggle between fellow inmates Lex and Freddy. She is forced to choose a side in the conflict, which has dire consequences. The director of the prison pursues a strict and uncompromising regime. The young and ambitious lawyer Erika wants to get to the top as quickly as possible and sometimes chooses a shorter route than the accepted 'right' way.

Gemengde gevoelens. Enerzijds is het een intens seizoen vol heftige emotionele gebeurtenissen voor zowel gevangen dames als personeel. Elke episode heeft een ontroerend een-tweetje waarbij twee (of meerdere) karakters de psychische druk van het gevangenisbestaan niet meer aankunnen. De personages zijn beter dan ooit op elkaar ingespeeld, waardoor de serie als dramaproductie bij vlagen werkelijk op een hoger plan weet te komen. Anderzijds is het script onlogischer, meer vergezocht en willekeuriger dan ooit. De volstrekt ongeloofwaardige ontsnapping uit seizoen twee wordt overtroffen met autoriteiten die in een stripboek nog karikaturaal zouden zijn. Het maakt de serie onbedoeld grappig. Plus- en minpunten resulteren in een climax, die naar Nederlandse standaarden best imposant oogt, maar die tegelijkertijd op een hilarische manier de suspension of disbelief tart. Oprechte ontroering raakt ondergesneeuwd onder het hardop lachen om zoveel onzin en gemakkelijke plotlijnen. Toch hoop ik stiekem dat de serie een vierde seizoen gegund is, al is het maar omdat het zoveel levendiger is dan de normaliter statisch ogende series op de Nederlandse televisie.

Mixed feelings.

On the one hand, it is an intense season full of intense emotional events for both imprisoned ladies and staff. Each episode has a touching one-two punch where two (or more) characters can no longer handle the psychological pressure of prison life. The characters are better than ever attuned to each other, so that the series as a drama production at times really manages to reach a higher level. On the other hand, the script is more illogical, more far-fetched and more arbitrary than ever. The utterly implausible escape from season two is surpassed with authorities that would still be caricatured in a comic book. It makes the series unintentionally funny.

Plus and minus points result in a climax, which looks quite impressive by Dutch standards, but which at the same time defies the suspension of disbelief in a hilarious way. Genuine emotion gets snowed under while laughing out loud at so much nonsense and easy plot lines. Still, I secretly hope that the series has been awarded a fourth season, if only because it is so much more lively than the normally static-looking series on Dutch television.
