Prima verfilming van Stephen King's gelijknamige roman: mysterieus, onheilspellend en behoorlijk spannend. Eén en ander voelt iets te opgerekt aan, maar al met al is het een juiste keuze geweest om hier een televisieserie van te maken in plaats van een film. Vooral de personages profiteren hier enorm van. Wel jammer dat de tweede helft van de reeks minder boeiend is dan de eerste, met name omdat het mysterie dan grotendeels al is opgelost.

Excellent film adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name: mysterious, ominous and quite exciting. Some things feel a bit too stretched, but all in all it was the right choice to make a television series instead of a movie. The characters in particular benefit greatly from this. It is a pity that the second half of the series is less interesting than the first, especially because the mystery has already been largely solved.

Mh, hier had ik meer van verwacht gezien het hoge cijfer op IMDB. Tevens houd ik wel van een goed King-verhaal. Maar deze bleef helaas erg mak. Er zitten wat dingen in waarvan ik denk "wat heb ik nu weer gemist?". Al snuffelend op internet ben ik daarin niet de enige. Erg vage serie. Begint goed, gemiddelde uitwerking, weinig sfeer. Slechts één scène die me deed opkijken aan het eind van seizoen 7. Helaas, niet geslaagd naar mij mening.

Mh, I expected more from this given the high rating on IMDB. I also like a good King story. But unfortunately this one remained very tame. There are some things in it that make me think "what did I miss again?". While snooping on the internet, I am not alone in this. Very vague series. Starts well, average effect, little atmosphere. Only one scene that made me look up at the end of season 7. Sadly, not a success in my opinion.

Geweldige Stephen King-vertelling, met drie uitmuntende eerste afleveringen. Mooi opgebouwde spanning, mysterieus, een snufje horror, wat bovennatuurlijke ingrediënten; wat wil je nog meer? Ben Mendelsohn (onder andere uit de serie Bloodline; daar lijkt hij na een carrièreswitch zo uit weggelopen) en Cynthia Erivo stelen hier de show. Maar ook in de bijrollen wordt uitstekend geacteerd. Zakt nergens echt in, hoewel de ontknoping in afleveringen 9 en 10 voorspelbaar is. Vakwerk.

Great Stephen King story, with three excellent first episodes. Nicely built up tension, mysterious, a pinch of horror, some supernatural ingredients; what else do you want? Ben Mendelsohn (from the series Bloodline; he seems to have walked away from that after a career switch) and Cynthia Erivo steal the show here. But the supporting roles are also excellent. Doesn't really sink into anything, although the denouement in episodes 9 and 10 is predictable. Craftsmanship.
