Top of the Lake plot

Police detective Robin Griffin returns to the New Zealand village where she grew up and experienced something terrible in her youth. She can get to work right away: the twelve-year-old daughter of the local underworld king is suicidal, pregnant and possibly raped, and after an initial interrogation is lost. Possible suspects abound among the many dubious male residents of Laketop, a community near an icy and fathomless lake. There are also queer women, led by GJ, an enigmatic guru who sets up her encampment for damaged women near the water's edge. The trail to the missing girl cuts across the disrupted community and confronts Detective Griffin with her dark past.

laughably bad. It's not the atmospheric staging and the mysterious atmosphere, but the simplistic feminist overtone ruins a lot. Men are assholes and women are the eternal victims. The world of Top of the Lake is that simple.

To cover up the one-sided message, it is, of course, cluttered with Freudian symbolism and New Age nonsense. It's all so unbelievable and far-fetched. And then also with a lead actress who has just as little facial expression on her face as Kristen Stewart. Holly Hunter and Peter Mullan are still somewhat amusing, but their roles are so caricatured that you can't take them seriously in the "grown-up" tone it pretends to have.

A lot more could have been achieved here if at least an attempt had been made to introduce some nuance.

Via movie meter:

Unbalanced series unfortunately. The setup of the mystery and the setting are fine and there are some nice shots, but with such locations and the fact of a disappeared girl, a lot more atmosphere could have been obtained, visually but especially musically. Virtually nothing of that has stuck while they are still quite essential parts (of a mystery). Fortunately, it gets better in the last two episodes.

Some of the characters I find too caricatured or too forced such as the director of Paradise, the boy who can only talk with his hands and the old wives' tits who come too flashy ('let us paint a free-spirited picture') . Agree with Donkerwoud; also started to bother me half way through the one-sided male and female approaches. Of the many male characters I can quickly think of only three that are good and of the female characters they are all well (meaning) or will be.

I still enjoyed watching it, but it feels like a missed opportunity. At first I sympathized with the detective girl, but because she is becoming more and more side-sighted and short-sighted (albeit due to circumstances and her background), I stopped drawing her at a certain point.

Watched this series after my Nicole Kidman marathon (even though she's only in season 2). I also saw that this series had piqued my interest in the past, so it had to be.

It starts interestingly and there are a number of exciting twists, nothing really big or special, but still captivating. The series mainly relies on the atmosphere. The images are truly stunning and the characters are well introduced. In contrast to others, it is easy to watch. However, the ending is a bit disappointing, because I had hoped for something more.
