Matt Shakman previously revealed why he left Star Trek 4 to take on the Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel.
The Fantastic Four are set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with yet another reboot, this time set for February of 2025. It will be the third attempt to get a solid franchise off the ground with those characters, with the last one released back in 2015.
Shakman, who previously worked on WandaVision for Disney+, says the opportunity to return to his Marvel "home" was one that he couldn't turn down, even if it meant leaving J.J. Abrams and the rest of the crew on Star Trek 4.
“I had a great time working on Star Trek for a little over a year, working closely with J.J. Abrams and everyone at Paramount, and I love that franchise, and I love that cast that J.J. put together, and it would have been an unbelievable pleasure to work with them on the fourth instalment there," the director previously told The Wrap.
“But movies have different journeys and momentums and and schedules are a little bit mercurial, and so when the Fantastic Four opportunity came up, it was just too hard to pass up, and to go back home to Marvel, a place that I worked on WandaVision at, with those people who are wonderful collaborators.”
Shakman provided a few small details as to what we can expect from the reboot, as he compared Fantastic Four to Strek Trek due to their starts in the 1960s and their focus on family.
"It's really a family there and to be able to go back and tackle something that I truly love, and they're very similar in some ways: they both were launched in the 60s at the same time, they're both about optimism and looking to the stars and technology can solve everything and they're about family too – the family you have, the family you make," he continued.
"So they're aligned in many ways and speak to my heart and equally, so I'm excited to be working on Fantastic Four."
Speculation as to who will play Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm is rife.
