A new trailer has been released for Pain Hustlers, starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans.

The official premise for the crime drama reads:

'High school dropout Liza Drake lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical start-up in a yellowing strip mall in Central Florida, where she soon finds herself at the center of a criminal conspiracy with deadly consequences.'

Pain Hustlers is directed by David Yates from a screenplay by Wells Tower which is based on the 2022 book of the same name by Evan Hughes.

In May of 2022, Netflix purchased the rights for the movie adaptation of the novel for $50 million.

It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and so far has received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. It will receive a limited release in theaters on 20 October before being released on Netflix on 27 October.

Pain Hustlers (2023)

Liza Drake wants to give her daughter a better life and she takes a job at a pharmaceutical company that isn't doing very well. Her charm and drive seem to offer the company a bright future. However, Liza ends up in a criminal plot with fatal consequences.

Directed by: David Yates
Stars: Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Catherine O'Hara

Pain Hustlers will, fairly or unfairly, be compared to Dopesick, the critically acclaimed limited series focusing on an opioid epidemic in the United States.

On Blunt's casting as the main character, Liza Drake, director Yates told CBR.com:

"Emily loved the character and she loved the idea of this story. I think what appealed to her more than anything was the fact that we were not taking a very straightforward approach to the story. It's a bit subversive, it's a bit naughty, it's got some humour at play. She said, 'You know what, David? I'm so sick of seeing leading female characters who have to be so honourable and straightforward.'

"What she loved about Liza is she's sometimes a little bit shady to get the deal done and fulfil her ambition, and she gets taken up by the whole rollercoaster of it. And I think what we both love about that character is the fact that Liza is fallible, ultimately, and she sort of loses her way a little bit in the moral maze of it all. And I think Emily was excited by creating that character for the audience to see a woman who's fallible and culpable and accountable for her actions."
