Tom Holland has explained what needs to happen for him to return as Peter Parker / Spider-Man one last time.
In 2021, the newest edition of his own trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home was released.
It was a commercial and critical success, earning an astonishing initial $1.893 billion from a budget of $200m. The movie saw Spider-Man come up against foes from parallel universes, Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) while receiving help from other forms of the Webslinger, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their roles from their own films.
The movie ended with the entire world forgetting about the existence of Peter Parker, including his girlfriend MJ, and so it appeared that Holland's Spidey reached the end of the narrative cycle.
But, several figures involved with the franchise have confirmed that the plan is for Holland to return as Parker for Spider-Man 4, and the actor himself says he would don the tights again as long as the filmmakers can better what came before.
"I think as long as we can do justice to Peter Parker," he told Entertainment Tonight.
"As long as we can keep elevating and making the films better and making them mean more, then I'll be there.
"I'd be stupid to say that I wouldn't be the luckiest kid alive if I got to do it again, there's stuff going on, but we'll have to just wait and see what happens."
Spider-Man producer wants Holland to return
Producer Amy Pascal has confirmed that a fourth movie is happening, suggesting Holland will be back.
"Are we going to make a fourth movie? Of course, we are," she said.
"We're in the process, but the writer's strike, nobody is working during the strike. We're all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we'll get started."
Pascal's words come not long after Marvel executive Kevin Fiege confirmed that story ideas were being formulated.
“All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now," he revealed.
Sony's Pascal said in 2021 that the plan was for Holland to return.
“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal told Fandango about No Way Home.
“We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies."
